If you are an ABBA fan, were a teenager in the 80’s or a seasoned traveller looking for a unique experience, then don’t miss, the 4 star Hotel Rival. The hotel is situated in the district of Södermalm on the beautiful southern island of Stockholm. It was once a 1930s cinema and is owned by former ABBA musician, Benny Andersson. The hotel is situated in a 1930s Art Déco building on Mariatorget Square. Hotel Rival has a 700 seater cinema where the movie Mamma Mia had its Swedish premiere with all the ABBA members present.
The hotel used to be known as Hotel Aston. Hotel Rival opened its doors in September 2003. Benny Anderson commissioned top Swedish designers to transform the hotel to be authentically 1930’s Art Deco. The designers created bold colour schemes, some of the walls are orange. They decorated with Kasthall woven rugs and all the rooms have an image from a Swedish film. Some of the rooms have pink chairs, orange ottomans and polka dot lampshades.There is a wide sweeping staircase and a round art deco bar with red seating. The bistro has a wall of windows with views over leafy Mariatorget square. One wall is covered with hundreds of film stars portraits.
The hotel is situated on an island of Stockholm, on Södermalm’s prettiest square (Mariatorget). Mariatorget Metro Station is only 150 metres away.
Stockholm City Museum is 500 meters away and The Great Cathedral of Stockholm is only 900 meters away from the hotel. You can walk around the streets of SoFo, with its many antique and boutique shops. A 10 minute walk away is Stockholm’s old town, Gamla Stan, which is a lovely place to walk along cobblestone alleyways and look at historical buildings. You can take a boat trip to Djurgården Island which has vast parklands and forests. This island has Vasamuseet (a Maritime museum) and Skansen (the world’s first open-air museum). There you can walk through five centuries of Swedish history, past historical buildings and homes and there are characters in period dress. The Museum of Modern Art (Moderna Museet) is on Skeppsholmen Island. You can walk through the area around Fjällgatan and look at the 16th century wooden houses.

Every room has an iconic image from Swedish cinema. The sheets are Egyptian cotton and you can choose from several different pillows from their pillow menu.
